Just the motivation I needed

Well this week was just what I expected....not very good at all. I gained 1.2 pounds :(  I knew I probably gained but I was hoping it wasn't that big of a gain. We had the Oak Alley arts and crafts festival this weekend. I worked at my parents booth both Friday and Saturday and well lets just say there was nothing healthy about it. Both days I brought an apple and a banana with me which I did eat. However, between the two days I also ate fried shrimp and french fries, crab cakes, ice cream (both days), and red beans. I felt ABSOLUTELY disgusting on Monday. The inside of my stomach felt like I had fireballs in it all day which made eating not so fun : /  You would have thought that I completely learned my lesson and would eat really well for the rest of the week right?!? Nope, I had Izzo's on Wednesday. I also did not track most of the things I ate this week. So was I surprised about my gain? Nope! Not at all!

As I mentioned in my last post my strength from the Lord is what carries me through. After eating Izzo's I once again felt pretty disgusting. On the way home I began to pray that the Lord change my heart from being so lazy and not caring. That was exactly my attitude this past week and it showed on the scale. Unfortunetly, I love food that tast good but is bad for my body. My prayer was that  I don't desire these foods and that I desire to work out each day. I want to be able to look at these foods and be able to turn away from them because I know how bad they are for my body. I want to be reminded beforehand exactly how I will feel after I eat the unhealthy food. When I am at the grocery store and want to buy something that I know I shouldn't have I always remind myself "If I don't have it at my house, I won't be able to eat it and I won't always want it." So I pass up whatever it is that I want to buy and go for a healthier option of food. Once I am back home and do not have that particular food I am over it and usually do not want it anymore.

After my weigh in I was very motivated to get back on track. After the meeting my sister and I went to Subway followed by Paradise Smoothie. We went in just to check it out since it is new. I wasn't going to get anything but after looking at the menu I couldn't help myself but to get a strawberry, kiwi, banana smoothie. It had fat free ice cream and weigh protein in the smoothie also. It was pretty good but not a place that I will be going often (ice cream in a smoothie can't be the best thing for you right?). When I got home I decided to go for a run. I ran 1.5 miles and improved my previous time. Lets just say running after eating what I ate was not a good combination : /  However I now have the motivation that I have been praying for all week. I am excited to continue on my journey to a healthier lifestyle. No, this week may not have been the best weigh in for me but it was just the motivation I needed!! It reminded me just how much I have to depend on the Lord's strength to carry me through this journey. It reminded me what it feels like to indulge in food that is bad for your body and to not follow up with exercise. I am thankful for this learning and growing opportunity and I am looking forward to moving forward in this journey.

Where Does My Strength Come From?

Last week was pretty interesting. When I first stepped on the scale I had gained .2 pounds. I was surprised but not surprised at the same time. I knew my week of eating out couldn't have earned me a big loss but at the same time I didn't think I had gained. After the meeting was over I went to the restroom. When I got back I asked them if I could weigh myself again just to see if it would make a difference and it did!! I ended up loosing .4 rather than gaining .2.  I try to workout before my weigh ins which is what I had done that day. However I drank too much water while working out so when I weighed in I was retaining water weight.

I have been having some trouble motivating myself to workout. There are plenty of days that I get home from work and I am tired and just want to relax, not workout. So where does my strength come from when I have none?   "I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." -Psalm 121:1-2. My strength comes from the Lord. The Lord who created me and knows my inward parts. He knows me better than I will ever know myself. When I am feeling lazy or tired I simply pray. I ask the Lord to give me the desire and the strength to workout. I know that I can do all things through the Lord who gives me strength. -Philippians 4:13. I constantly remind myself of this verse each and every time I find myself struggling to either start or complete a workout.

One of the reasons I decided to change my lifestyle was because this is the body that the Lord has given me and I want to honor and respect it. This is something that I have not exactly done the best of. I have put so much junk into my body and have not taken care of it as I should. I absolutely can not do this without the strength from the Lord.

Next week: I've had a pretty tough week again this week. We will see how my weigh in goes tomorrow. Unfortunately I already know that I have not met my goal that I had set for the week but that will give me just the push I need to get to my goal for next week. Next blog I will tell you about some of the struggles I have faced this past week.

A Weekend of Eating Out

Well this has been a weekend full of eating out. Eating out and eating healthy are pretty difficult. I tried to make the best choices possible but I'm not quite sure how I did. I guess we will have to see what the scale says on Thursday. I will definitely have to be very commited to my workouts this week because I didn't do very much working out this weekend.

Thursday was Izzo's. As I mentioned in my previous blog nothing was healthy about my Izzo's visit. I did have veggies on my burrito but when it is topped of with queso it's not quit the healthiest lol

Saturday our group of friends from highschool got together. It had ben about 4 or 5 years since we were last all together and it was so much fun. These are the girls that I was with pretty much everyday in highschool. They are the friends that no matter how long we have been apart we can pick right back up where we left off. I absolutely love those kinds of friendships that the Lord has definitely blessed me with!
Needless to say we went out to eat. We went to Chimes and I got a turkey burger on a wheat bun with no mayo. However, I did add cheese to my burger. I also got a side of sweet potato fries with water to drink. I pretty much killed it on our appetizers of cheese fries and spinach and artichoke dip with fried bowtie pasta. I knew I was going to eat that night so I planned for it during the day. I ate a light breakfast and a salad for lunch that way I knew I had plenty of points that night.

Sunday after chuch I went to Piccadilly's with a group of friends. I tried to make the best decisions possible but when I got home and calculated my points I realized my decisions were not as great as I thought. I had the baked fish (unfortunatly it was coated in butter). A small salad, a side of corn, a roll (which I probably could have left out), and some strawberries and bannana's which were sitting in some red stuff which made it not so healthy.
Then Sunday night I went over to a friends house who had cooked a delicious dinner!! I probably would have never cooked this on my own but now I may have just found a new meal to cook :) It was chicken cooked in some delicious sauce (which I can not remember exactly what it was), asparagus, baked okra and squash. Asparagus and baked squash is something I probably would have never cooked on my own but I absolutely loved it!!! It was such a filling meal. Afterwards we went out for frozen yogurt which is another thing I can not resist. Ice cream is one of my biggest weaknesses. It will definitely have to be one of my treats that I don't get very often.

This weekend was not only filled with eating out but with great friends. It was such an encouraging and fun weekend. The fellowship I had this weekend was much needed and very much encouraging. I am so blessed with the friends the Lord has provided in my life and could not ask for anything better.

Two In One

This week I met 2 goals in 1 meeting!! I was beyond excited about meeting these two goals.
Goal Number 1: To be back down in the 100's with my weight! The last time I have seen 100 in my weight was a little over a year ago when I last did weight watchers. However that wasn't for long when I jumped back to the 200's after not following plan as I should have.

Goal Number 2: My first 5 pound mark! I actually jumped right over 5 and lost a total of 6 pounds so far :) This is a goal set by weight watchers in which we celebrate at meetings. I received a 5 lb star sticker and the excitement of support from the meeting members. A star sticker may not sound so exciting to most people but for me it is exciting to go back and look at my stickers and see my accomplishments. You get one for every 5 pounds you loose. I have placed mine in my tracker book so that I can see them each week and be reminded of my accomplishments this far.

One of my most favorite places to eat is Izzo's Illegal Burrito. Now, when I go to Izzo's I eat completely unhealthy. Therefore this is why Izzo's is going to be a treat for me from now on and not an all the time thing. It was just that this weekend!! After my weigh in on Thursday I was so excited about my accomplishments and had been craving Izzo's for awhile now that I decided to treat  myself to Izzo's. Weight watchers really stresses how this is not a diet and this a lifestyle and they want you to be real with yourself about your lifestyle choices. My thoughts on Izzo's is that it is a place that I love to eat and like I mentioned earlier it is not healthy for me at all ( I love queso and even some extra queso ;) ) Therefore when I go to Izzo's I will get exactly what I like on my burrito or nacho's and I just won't go as often as I would have previously gone. It will be a very special treat for me and my visits will not occur often. I also will be very careful of what I eat the rest of the day and make sure to work out that day.

Goals and rewards for accomplishing those goals are so important to set for yourself. I used to always look at the bigger goals and I believe that is why time and time again I would never reach those goals. This time around I have been focusing on the smaller goals which seem so much more realistic to reach, especially when you are having an off day or week. Weight watchers does an awesome job with helping you to set these smaller goals.
Some of there goals and rewards are:
-A five pound sticker for the first 5 pounds you loose and every additional 5 pounds you loose
-a BRAVO sticker for nonscale victories (ex: I received one for a challenge I completed that our leader had thrown out for us to try)
-Loose 5% of your weight- receive a purple 5% sticker  (This is minus 10 lbs for me and I am only 4 lbs away from this goal!! Very excited to meet my next goal :) )
-Loose 10% of your starting weight- receive a key ring
-Loose 25, 50, 75, and/or 100 pounds- receive a charm to place on your key ring
-Have attended 16 paid meetings- Receive a SAS "stay and succeed" charm
-Achieve your ulitimate weight goal- A star charm
-Reach weight goal and maintain for so many weeks you become a lifetime member and attend meetings for FREE!!!!

Like I said to some this may sound silly but these are all GREAT accomplishments and deserve rewards. These are things you can look at and remind yourself of your accomplishments and this can help to push you to continue succeeding.
I have been trying to think of personal rewards for myself and I am still brainstorming. My reward for meeting my first two goal was Izzo's.  For my 5% I have been debating between a much needed pedicure or a new pair of shoes ( I may even do both.) And for my 10% I think I have decided on rewarding myself with a message :) I have never gotten a message before and have been wanting one. At my 10% goal I will have lost 20 pounds which is a huge accomplishment!!
I am hoping to reach my 5 % by the end of my spring break which is the first week of April. Hard work and dedication will for sure pay off!!

WEEK 4

I finally did it! After 2 weeks of gaining small amounts of weight I finally LOST weight this week!!! It was a celebration for sure :) After she told me that I lost the first words out of my mouth were "FINALLY!"  I was getting a little frustrated with the gains and I honestly do not think I could have taken another week of gaining. This week I lost 2.4 pounds for a total weight loss of 4.6 pounds.
I tracked every single thing I ate this week. I often found myself with extra points at the end of the day. Weight Watchers suggest you get ALL of your daily points value daily. So I decided to talk to my leader to see what I could do to help me out. She suggested things such as using 2% milk instead of skim, using regular cheese instead of low fat, and making sure I am getting all of my healthy guidelines in. She suggested that I add more protein to my daily meals so that is something I will be working on improving this week.
Another thing that I was more consistent and aware about this week was my exercise. Friday, Saturday and Sunday I was unable to get my workout in. However, I work at a seafood restaurant on the weekends so Friday night I got some (a lot) of walking in at work.  Being that it is a seafood restaurant on a Friday night in lent we were pretty busy which meant lots of fast walking for me. On Monday I wasn't able to workout outside before it got dark so I tried something new. The house I was staying at had the washer and dryer upstairs. Therefore, when picking up my laundry I brought it down the steps ONE clothing item at a time. I had 23 pieces of clothes so that was 23 trips up and down the stairs. Thankfully I had a friend there supporting me and pushing me when I was getting tired. On Tuesday I went for a walk around the lakes at LSU. That was my first time and I loved it! It was a very peaceful and relaxing walk. I was able to walk with one my really good friends which meant good catch up time :) On Wednesday our class took a field trip to the zoo which was super fun. Not only did I get in some walking during the day I went for a walk when I got home. The weather was way too pretty to sit inside. While walking I decided I wanted to run to see how far I could push myself. I ended up running for 12 minutes (I wasn't tracking distance but I normally run about 11-12 minute mile. So my guess is that I ran about a mile.) I was so happy about my run because I hadn't run in so long that I didn't know exactly how far I could run. On Thursday and Friday I did my Biggest Loser: Last Chance Workout DVD. If you have ever watched The Biggest Loser you know that these workouts are no joke and are pretty intense! I won't always give you a run down of my workout every single week. I wanted to give everyone an idea of what kind of activities I have been getting in. I was excited and looked forward to my workout each day which is a definite change of attitude.
One other big change I have made is trying my absolute hardest to not eat after 7:00 p.m. This is not always easy especially on Friday nights. Like I mentioned earlier I work at the restaurant on Friday's. I get to work at 4 and work until 8. I do not get to eat dinner until after I finish cleaning up which is usually around 9:00 p.m. I usually eat salads every Friday night since I am eating so late.

My goal for next week... I am less than 2 pounds away from being back into the 100's!!! I am really hoping to meet this goal along with my first 5 pound weight loss by Thursday's meeting. Hopefully I will have met my goal by then. After meeting that goal I will set my next small goal that I would like to meet.

A Fresh Start

Here's my second attempt at blogging. I'm not sure what happened to my other blog. I could pull the blog up but could not update it so I was forced to make a new one. So here is my fresh start to blogging, hope you enjoy it!

I am 24 years old and technically considered obese for my age and height. This is scary and should not be! I have always been overweight my entire life. A little over a year ago I had a reality check when I saw some of my family members on my dads side of the family and knew that's where I was heading if I didn't take control now. I began Weight Watchers and was very successful for about 4 months. After that I began slipping into all of my old ways. I had tons of excuses. I was going to "start back" after my birthday, my cousin got out of the hospital, Easter, Summer, I graduated, Christmas, etc. It was always a new EXCUSE. These excuses got me NO WHERE. I have stayed around the same weight the entire time which was okay for me because I wasn't gaining. This was NOT okay, but in my head I convinced myself it was.

About a month ago my mom, older sister and myself began Weight Watchers. To be honest, I really didn't want to do it again. I wanted the results but didn't want to do the work to get the results. Thankfully my sister stayed on me about joining. I thought doing this with my mom and sister would have been all the motivation I needed. I get a little competitive when it comes to stuff like this. I don't want them to do better than me so I would normally step my game up. That didn't even motivate me this time. After I had signed up I still wasn't motivated and was kind of halfway tracking. In the first 2 weeks I lost 3.2 lbs when I was not even trying. There was the motivation I needed!!!
Week 3: The following week was Mardi Gras and I was visiting a friend in Elba, Alabama so I did not expect to do so great. I only gained .4 pounds that week. I was pretty excited about that because being on vacation and eating healthy is not always the easiest thing. The friends I stayed with were eating pretty healthy also so that made it much easier.
Week 4: I was pretty disappointed this week. This was my first week since starting that I tracked every single thing I ate and worked out about 3 times that week. When I weighed in and the lady told me that I gained AGAIN this week I was very frustrated. I gained .6 this week. This may not sound like a lot but when you put together what I gained this week and the previous week I gained back 1 of my 3.2 pounds that I lost. Even though this was frustrating it was an eye opener. Once I was frustrated, and a little discouraged, I realized my immediate thought went to food. Food has always been a comfort to me which is one of the changes I am trying to make. I immediately wanted Izzo's and a large Root Beer. After venting to my mom and sister for awhile I then began to think of ways I could improve myself for next week.

I am not just trying to shrink the size of my waist. I am trying to live a healthier lifestyle. I want to learn to immediately turn to something else for comfort (The Lord, exercise, reading, etc) rather  than running to food. I want to find healthier snacks (fruit, vegetables, etc) to eat when I'm bored rather than grabbing a bag of chips or some candy. I want to drink more water than coke. I want to move more rather than just sitting around all the time. I want to become HEALTHIER!!! One day when I hopefully have children I want to be able to teach my children how to live a healthy lifestyle. I do not want them to grow up obese. I want them to learn healthy ways from the start.

I pray that throughout my journey that the Lord will be made known and glorified because without His strength I couldn't do any of this. He gave me my body and I want to take care of it, not destroy it with the junk I put in it. When I am weak and I am having a rough week I know that he is my strength and will give me the strength and knowledge that I need to pull through. I am excited to do this journey with The Lord, my mother and my sister by my side!

I am looking forward to updating you throughout my journey. I am hoping that through this blog I gain an accountability system from some of my closest friends and family. Love you guys :)
